Surviving Rita: A tale of two data centers
For the second hurricane in a row, New Orleans-based DirectNIC kept its servers up and running as Hurricane Rita lashed the area. It even offered to help out another Web hosting vendor, EV1Servers.net, in Houston. But EV1Servers.net did just fine on its own.

Update: As Rita drew near, Web hosting vendor prepared
About 25 employees of Houston-based Web hosting vendor EV1Servers.net vowed to hunker down inside the company's offices and data centers ahead of Hurricane Rita, which made landfall early Saturday.

Mobile Trojan targets PCs too
Virus writers have come up with a way to make their malicious software jump from a mobile phone to the PC. Security researchers on Thursday reported the first sightings of a new Trojan program, which masquerades as pirated software for mobile phones and attempts to infect PCs via the phone's memory card.

VeriSign develops tools for wireless roaming
Mobile users typically move among multiple networks: a wired DSL connection at home, a Wi-Fi hot spot at the airport, a landline connection at a hotel, and 3G service in between. Today, users must use a connection manager to log off one service and log on to another manually. Future smart clients, however, will be able to detect available networks and switch among them based on which networks are fastest, which are cheapest, and which are most secure for business use.
